- Narelle Oliver -

A group of twenty budding authors and twenty would-be illustrators gathered with Narelle Oliver in the library in mid October. Mrs Oliver explained to the students how she illustrates her stories using lino prints. Her subjects are mostly from nature, so she spends time in forests, national parks and by the sea observing animals in their habitat. She backs up her observations with lots of research, returns to her studio with photographs of the animals in different poses and takes her time with her drawings. When satisfied with a drawing, Mrs Oliver outlines her image on to lino and then begins carving. |
Mrs Oliver told the writers to observe how animals behaved
as she showed the students a video clip of predators hunting. She told
the children to try to capture those movements by using strong action
verbs and by including sound effects. She reminded them of the importance
of using descriptive words and phrases and putting detail into their
stories. |
